Thank you for this extremely detailed bug report. I appreciate it.

>From the stack traces you provide, I am fairly certain that o.a.c.logging.impl.
SLF4FLogFactory.release() is being called by a copy of a o.a.c.logging.LogFactory 
class shipping with commons-logging.jar or commons-logging-api.jar, and not jcl104-
over-slf4j.jar as I had previously assumed.

Could you please shed some light as to the location of the commons-logging.jar,
commons-logging-api.jar and jcl104-over-slf4j.jar as found in your deployment?

Moreover, are you overriding Tomcat's default class loader delegation model in any 
way?
 
I tried to reproduce the bug, but for the moment, without success.
