It looks like this bug I raised is indeed invalid. Sorry for the trouble.

I upgraded to Eclipse 3.3.2, and I'm also using Maven 2.0.7, and the standard
1.5.2 release is working fine.

I think I resolved this by either upgrading my Eclipse to 3.3.2, or updating to
junit-4.5. In both cases, there's a relationship between the test runner and
the version of log4j that gets bound to in the Eclipse test runner plug-in.

In any case, the SLF4J end of things seems OK.
