The licenses are inherited from the parent.

They are useful to visualize the licenses of all dependencies of a project.

See http://lilith.huxhorn.de/projects/de.huxhorn.lilith/dependencies.html for
example.

There are tools available that check for license compatibility and report
possible problems like Apache vs GPL.
