UPDATE:

I fixed this last error (java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/slf4j/MDC) by
switching from slf4j-api-1.4.0.jar (the JAR that comes with logback 0.9.8) to
slf4j-api-1.4.3.jar from http://www.slf4j.org/download.html .
