The initial goal was to support both JDK 1.4 and JDK 1.5 by two
distinct SLF4J API artifacts. I contend that it is far from trivial to
avoid problems in all deployment scenarios, even if everyone uses JDK 1.5.

In log4j, we had a sophisticated migration strategy spanning three
years whereby we renamed the Category class as Logger. It was a pretty
miserable failure, causing endless headaches. I just do not want go
through the same nightmare again.

You can argue that this time we have done our homework, that this time
is different. Even if it is not 100% rational, I am not going to take
any chances.
