Yes, the placeholders work as you noted. That was actually an afterthought I
had. It was pretty cool that Logback already had the code to do it.

I had forgotten about the javadoc comment on getData(). Given that the object
would be lost when the Map is reinstantiated I think it makes more sense to
take up your suggestion to add the put, get, etc methods with Strings to the
interface and have getData return an unmodifiable map.
