I believe I've implemented most, if not all, of the things being requested here
in the Log4J 2.0 API. Feel free to review it and use it however you want. You
can find it at
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/logging/log4j/branches/BRANCH_2_0_EXPERIMENTAL/rgoers/log4j2-api/.
OTOH, as a PMC member on the Log4j project you are more than welcome to simply
work with me there and help me get it out of its sandbox.
